In QuickBooks, click Lists, then Templates in the menu bar. From there, click on the template you want to back up, click the box that says "Templates" into the lower left hand corner and then Export for a window that seems like this:

As soon as you click the Export option, you will observe a window asking for which you wish to save the template. Simply choose an external drive, a flash drive, or other location that's not just like most of your computer since the place for safekeeping of the template.

OTHER TEMPLATE NOTES:

The process above lets you backup one template at any given time. To backup multiple templates, you will need to use Windows Explorer to locate them and then copy and paste them.
QuickBooks invoice templates are stored as .DES files, in order to quickly do a look for *.DES files on your pc to find where they truly are stored.
You can never have too many backups. QuickBooks has been proven to corrupt templates every every now and then or a co-worker may mess one up as well. By having backups, you can quickly and easily pull it back since it must be and acquire returning to work.
